Calvin Meets Mario?

29 01 2008

The other day I was looking through Game Informer, a popular video game magazine, when I came across an interesting article entitled Rated Mature: The Rising Tide of Games with Something to Say. In the article, Matt Miller, one of the editors, talks about how more and more games are incorporating moral elements into their plots. Game developers are giving the players opportunities in the games to make choices between right and wrong. Not only that, but he also went on to describe how certain games are actually dealing with issues of free will. In a book or movie you are bound to the perspectives of the characters, but in a game where you are the character you have the ability to choose what happens. This idea of an interactive protagonist, as Matt calls it, is allowing for games to “explore philosophy, psychology, and morality.” It’s seems that there is a greater cry for relevant content even in the gaming world. Check out this quote from the article, “Should a character in Mass Effect ask if you believe in God, or is that best reserved for Sunday school? The developers are listening. They want (and need) to make games you are going to play. They know we want fun. But do we want more?” I found this whole article really interesting. In a culture so soaked in media and video games I wonder what role Christians could play in it. What are your thoughts about this?

College Drop-Out Myths

This is a great string of articles (and a great new book teaser to be honest) about statistics on the rates and reasons for college-aged people dropping out of church.

I think you’ll find the myths interesting and encouraging! I know I did. It’s definitely going to be a book I want to get!

Are you Passionate? As much as Tom Cruise?

22 01 2008

Tommy BoyTom Cruise has been pretty passionate about his faith.  Of course, this video doesn’t describe near anything of what he actually believes nor how a good Scientologist should go about ’saving’ the worlds; however, it’s interesting.

I found this video link through this post.  You can learn more about Scientology here.

Kind of makes me wonder about how passionate we are?  Is passion fearful to see or is it compelling?  Is there a line that gets crossed?  Does passion, at any point, become persuasive distaste?

Theology in a Box?

18 01 2008

JesusThinkChristian.net recently posted a blog about quizzes that label you and your theology. Pretty interesting. Below is a portion of it: (click here for full post).

——————————–

Oh, you know, these quiz things are sort of fun. Sure, as much as she/he tried to not, the quiz author has injected each question with their own bias. And then there’s the whole issue of whether you slept well or not last night, or whether or not pastor was ‘on’ last week, or some such other reason that this particular morning you are definitely not feeling like a Calvinist, let alone a five-point one.

But I checked and it is Friday, which means it’s time to relax:
