Blues on the Field
by Scott Stubbert, Director of Single Adult Ministries
As I sat in my office on May 6, putting aloe on my sunburned head, I began to evaluate the Blues on the Field event. I looked back on the time and energy spent on that weekend. I had a great time and people seemed to enjoy themselves. But was it worth it? Blues on the Field was successful for the following reasons:
The gospel was preached. We were able to present the good news between sets. The\ good news is not, “I’m okay, you’re okay.” We are not okay. Romans tell us that all have sinned, and the price for that sin is death. We might be good, but if we break just part of the law, we are guilty of all the law (James 2). God is a jealous lover who wants all of us. The good news is more than “Jesus is love.” Some people argue, “If you loved me you would let me….” Love doesn’t always let. Sometimes love prevents and sometimes love punishes.
The good news is more than the fact Jesus wants to be our friend. A true friend does not “forgive and forget” without dealing with the past. That is why Jesus came, not to be friends with us, but to “serve and give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
That is the good news–Jesus paid the price for our sins. “Christ isn’t just our friend. To call him supremely that is to damn him with faint praise. He is our friend, but he is so much more! By his death on the cross Christ has become the lamb that was slain for us, our redeemer, the one who has made peace between us and God, who has takes our guilt on himself, who has conquered our most deadly enemies and has assuaged the personal, just wrath of God” (Mark Dever, The Gospel and Personal Evangelism, Crossway, 2007). All that is left is for us to accept this free gift that God has extended to us. We are then forgiven and promised eternal life. That is the GOOD NEWS.
The Singles body served. The event ran smoothly because we worked as a body. We were not all eyes or noses, but we were unified. We were the body of Christ, and we were used to serve people and love people so that some could hear and understand the good news. I have been to events where it is difficult to see Jesus, but this was not one of them. I was able to see Jesus through all the aspects of the event–from the night before, when we gathered on the field and prayed, through the crab feed, concert and the message. Even during set-up and take-down, Jesus was seen.
Because the gospel was preached and the body served, people where able to enjoy crab, music, fun and the good news. Even though I was tired and sunburned at the end of the day, it was worth it. Jesus was shared with those who joined us at Blues on the Field.
