Good Samaritan Ministry “A man…fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead…But a Samaritan…when he saw him, he took pity on him…bandaged his wounds…took him to an inn and took care of him...Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:25-37)
Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan to explain what it means to obey the second greatest commandment, “love your neighbor as yourself.”
This is what our Good Samaritan Ministry is all about. We attempt to be a help to the needy primarily by providing food for the family. We can’t help with everything, but this is one way we can. Each month Good Sam purchases over 18 tons of food and assists 150 - 175 families in our community with groceries. Families are generously supplied with a trunk load of groceries that will fill their refrigerator and cupboards for a couple of weeks. Along with the groceries, every family hears about the love of Christ and receives an invitation to our weekend services and the other ministries of our church.
You might ask, “Does this really make a difference for these families?” The answer is, “Absolutely!” Every week we see people come to faith in Christ through Good Sam and many have begun attending church here.
You might also ask, “Is there a way I can help?” Again, the answer is, “Absolutely!” One way is to volunteer. This ministry requires a lot of workers who have a heart to help and love people. Another way is to give financially to Good Sam. Good Sam operates independently from the general budget of Big Valley Grace and relies on the generous over and above giving of God’s people in order to help meet the needs of the poor in our community. You can do so by designating additional giving above your regular giving to our Good Samaritan Ministry.
